It's not as pretty, as having a built in IR receiver, but it works (and you can move it to directly under your tv if your Mac Mini is in a cabinet).

Sep 21, 2017· On the 4th generation AppleTV the IR sensor was located about ½ inch to the left of the LED on the box's front side. Through experimentation I found that it has been moved on the 4K AppleTV. The new location is about 1" in from the left side edge of the box on the front. Hope this helps someone else save some time.
